Avoidable Mobile Marketing Mistakes

Avoidable Mobile Marketing Mistakes

As more people start to adopt mobile marketing strategies we can start to examples of good strategies, as well as a few that show you what not to do. There are a few common mistakes that are proving troublesome for many companies that ultimately are taking away from their userÔÇÖs experience. Mobile marketing is a great opportunity for marketers to reach out to consumers, and with new technologies coming out like Augmented Reality and QR codes it becomes very important that you do it right. These are a few of the common mistakes companies are making today in their mobile marketing strategies.

Shiny Objects

With all the new methods, techniques, and technologies coming out, marketers are forgetting that you need to keep it simple. It is important to remember that what you are promoting or selling stays the same. What changes is how you are getting it out there. Many who are failing with their mobile marketing campaigns are chasing after the new and shiny technologies instead of pushing mobile products or proven methods. ThatÔÇÖs not to say trying new things is bad, you just need to stay focused and not distract your consumers from your product.

Execution

Many of the bigger companies around started mobile marketing campaigns, but they forgot to do the most important thing when pushing mobile ads. They had great creativity when it came to their campaigns, but they didnÔÇÖt optimize for mobile. Ads and promotions are just to get users to visit your landing page where you can show off. When that landing page isnÔÇÖt mobile optimized, the user experience suffers. Mobile users donÔÇÖt want to have to pinch and zoom to see your content, you need to make it easy for them, or they will just leave.

Effectiveness

In older methods for advertising you were not really able to measure the effectiveness of your campaign. Many tried and struggled to get what they were looking for, while others simply didnÔÇÖt try at all. With new mobile marketing campaigns you can very easily track clicks, impressions, searches, and more. It is now possible to know what is working and how well. Yet many companies are still not tracking it at all. In order to efficiently measure your campaigns effectiveness, you need to know what works and what doesnÔÇÖt.

User Behavior

Mobile marketing seems to be following in online advertisingÔÇÖs footsteps. Campaigns are using the same strategy of placing ads around the ÔÇ£experienceÔÇØ taking up space and really not doing much. Users are within the content and for the most part ignore the ads around it. Campaigns need to start focusing on the user and come up with innovative ways to promote content to the users, like putting ads within the content where they canÔÇÖt be ignored. By thinking about user behavior, we can get a better understanding of how to reach said user.

Many Platforms

When you start a mobile marketing campaign, you need to realize that there are many platforms that are available to promote your product. It isnÔÇÖt a matter of choosing one or two of them to work with; you need to use them all. By utilizing all of the available platforms correctly you will see success. The more you promote your campaign, the more awareness is directed towards it, and the better your chances of user participating.

What I Think

You can have a great campaign with the best of the best working on it, but if you leave your landing page unoptimized for mobile, the campaign is going to trip. TodayÔÇÖs world is all about the user experience. If you want to succeed then you need to make the user experience short, simple, and to the point. There is nothing wrong with using new technology to do cool things; however this can detract from your overall product and the message you are trying to send. For many, this first step is the biggest problem and is where their mobile marketing campaign trips.

Mobile marketing is a relatively new method for reaching out to the populace, but it is important as a huge percentage of users carry their mobile devices with them where every they go. This creates a perfect marketing medium for advertisers. The problem hits when they make mistakes like making ads super flashy detracting from their message, leaving their landing page unoptimized, not tracking their progress, ignoring user behavior and lastly not using all of the tools available to them. These basic mistakes are pitfalls many have fallen for.
