The mobile development company, Apple, made some rather exciting announcements at their recent yearly conference. Not only did we get the iPhone 5 announcement, but we also got to see the new and updated iPod line-up and the release of iOS 6. Here is what we said about each announcement. You can watch it all for yourself here.
This is likely the most anticipated announcement of the conference. It is coming with a 4-inch display, new dock connectors called Lightning, an A6 processor, increased battery life, and even a new speaker. This mobile device has been the topic of much conversation and we now know it is coming on September 21st. There are 3 models at different price ranges with the 16GB version being $199, the 32GB being $299 and the 64GB landing on $399. As usual previous models will be dropping down to $99 or possible given away with a two year contract.
The iPod nano was updated to have a larger screen with a more powerful display. Not only that, the device is now the thinnest model yet at 5.4mm thick. There are physical controls on the side of the device as well as a home button on the front like the iconic iPhone. They added in a FM tuner into the device and enabled widescreen video. It also has the new lightning connector as well as Bluetooth.
The new iPod Touch will launch in October with 2 models pricing at $299 for the 32GB and $399 for the 64GB. They have increased the size of the screen to 4-inches bringing it right up there with the new iPhone. To compensate for the strain of the new display, Apple replaced with the A4 chip with its predecessor the A5. The A5 is not a ÔÇ£newÔÇØ part however it is a large upgrade bringing in some features that were previously unavailable to the Wi-Fi only devices. The Touch is also getting Siri! With the addition of the helpful Assistant and the option of 5 colors this device will make its owners happy for sure.
The Apple earbuds have finally received a meaningful update. Apple improved the sound for a more rich experience than the previous version, though they donÔÇÖt form a seal in your ear anymore so you can still hear traffic and environmental sounds. They improved the bass as well creating a great sound experience. They can take a bit to get positioned in your ear just right, so comfort is really a preference between the EarPods and their predecessor.
On September 19th the newest version of iOS will be available to iPods and iPhones. The changes to the operating system are pretty impressive. Some new features coming are a new version of the Maps software to replace Google Maps, the new Passport function, and Siri is seeing a bit of an update. Behind the scenes we see some of the most impressive changes with the first being a change to the Mobile Application Store. They have changed the ÔÇ£categoriesÔÇØ button in favor of ÔÇ£GeniusÔÇØ. Looking into this a little further, it means that Apple is confident enough in their search and recommendations that they elected to push for users to trust it. The list of changes over all is extensive and you can find out more here.
What I Think
The new iPhone looks to be a fantastic device. Mixing that in with all of the additional announcements I would say that this conference has stirred up some serious excitement. The only thing people are still waiting to hear about is the rumored iPad mini. That said the iPhone 5 is likely to go above and beyond expectations.
